EWI’s Worldwide Cybersecurity Summit will bring together leaders of governments, businesses and civil society from around the world to determine new measures to ensure the security of the world’s digital infrastructure.
Electronic attacks around the world have compromised confidential information, crippled official web sites and have exposed the vulnerability of financial data. They have heightened fears that criminals or terrorists could use cyberspace to paralyze communications infrastructure, international financial systems or critical government services.
Despite the severity of these threats, the international community has not come to agreement on how best to deal with them. EWI’s Worldwide Cybersecurity Summit will work to fill this gap, bringing together leaders from the public and private sectors to reframe cybersecurity concerns and to devise collective strategies to address them.
Registration for the summit is now closed. If you would like to attend, please contact us for more information.

EWI’s cybersecurity initiative has already convened several consultations that have brought together key countries such as the U.S., China, Russia and India to begin developing a shared understanding of cyber threats. The Worldwide Cybersecurity Summit will build on these consultations and produce concrete proposals to bring order to this chaotic and increasingly dangerous arena.
Speakers and presenters include:
  • Bob Schieffer, CBS Chief Washington Correspondent

  • Udo Helmbrecht, Executive Director, ENISA

  • Kamlesh Bajaj, CEO, Data Protection Council of India,

  • Michael Dell, Chairman and CEO, Dell, Inc.

  • Howard A. Schmidt, U.S. Cybersecurity Coordinator

  • Randall Stephenson, Chairman and CEO, AT&T

  • Scott Charney, Vice President for Trustworthy Computing, Engineering Excellence, and Environmental Sustainability at Microsoft; former Chief of Computer Crime and Intellectual Property in the Criminal Division of

    the U.S. Department of Justice

  • Melissa Hathaway, Senior Advisor to Project Minerva; former Acting Senior Director for Cyberspace for the U.S. National Security and Homeland Security Councils

While plenary speakers will offer visions for the future of cyberspace, the bulk of the summit will be highly interactive. It will give participants opportunities to collaborate with peers from around the world. The structure has two main components: there are eight sectors, with one or more breakthrough groups within each sector. Participants can expect to work on critical concerns that are stalled or are receiving little to no attention in international diplomatic circles.
The eight sectors are:
  • Information and Communications Technology

  • Financial Services

  • Essential Governmental Services

  • Energy

  • Transportation

  • National Security

  • Media

Registration for the summit is now closed. If you would like to attend, please contact us for more information.

Avivah Litan: Why did Visa acquire Cybersource?

Avivah Litan writes for the Gartner Blog about the recent acquisition of Cybersource by Visa and wonders out loud about the motivating factors behind the decision to pay a "whopping $2 Billion" for the online gateway.

I was hit with the news that Visa acquired Cybersource, one of the largest Internet Payment Gateways, for a whopping $2 billion. This is a very unusual move – first time I know of that a card network went into the Internet Payment acquiring business. The two have worked together since 1999 on fraud detection and the partnership worked well, allowing Cybersource to maintain its card brand independence while benefiting from Visa’s fraud detection know-how and data. So why this move now?

Merchant Warehouse Lowers Interchange for Merchants via MICROS

Merchant Warehouse To Bring Lower Interchange Fees to Merchants Using MICROS-Retail Xstore Java POS

Retail payment processors look to save merchants up to 12% on transactions; will also add enhanced data protection through tokenization and SSL connections
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Merchant Warehouse®, a premier provider of merchant accounts and credit card processing solutions, today announced that it has integrated its MerchantWARE®BINsmart™ with the MICROS-Retail Xstore™ Java POS. With this integration, merchants will save up to 12 percent on interchange fees, as well as receive an out-of-the-box solution that incorporates a secure payment processing solution using tokenization and SSL connections.
“MICROS-Retail is a best-in-class provider of POS systems to the retail market”
Merchant Warehouse’s BINSmart™ helps merchants process transactions at the lowest possible cost by automatically identifying the card type being used in the transaction, and prompting debit card users to enter their PIN. This sophisticated, yet simple solution avoids Interchange rates and fees by opting for PIN-debit transactions over credit whenever possible. Interchange fees make up the majority of a merchant’s processing expenses, but since PIN-debit transactions are not processed on the Interchange networks, PIN-debit transactions are less expensive.
MICROS-Retail develops retail software solutions for both store and direct channels and provides point-of-sale and store management, eCommerce platforms, order management, loss prevention, sales audit, gift card and loyalty, CRM, merchandising and cross-channel solutions. Through this integration, once a transaction is run through the MICROS-Retail POS terminal, all sensitive credit card data is transported via an encrypted SSL connection to the Merchant Warehouse payment gateway where data is tokenized and returned to the POS for final transaction.
In addition to the improved savings and security, the integration with MICROS-Retail creates another opportunity for Merchant Warehouse to deliver its products and services to the small and mid-sized business retail industry. MICROS-Retail systems are currently installed in over 19,000 stores in 30 countries.
“MICROS-Retail is a best-in-class provider of POS systems to the retail market,” said Henry Helgeson, co-CEO of Merchant Warehouse. “I believe our MerchantWARE® and BINsmart integration with MICROS-Retail creates a wonderful product for the small to medium-sized retailer that requires minimal integration and support and delivers excellent cost savings. With Merchant Warehouse, the SMB retailer has a very powerful, easy-to-manage payment processing option that helps them best manage their costs and daily operations.”
