U.S. Hits 1 Billion Bankcard Circulation Plateau - Here's the Breakdown

Through year-end 2010, there were more than a billion credit and debit cards in circulation in the United States.

Here's the breakdown:  

  • American Express credit: 48.9 million
  • MasterCard credit: 171 million
  • Visa credit: 269 million
  • MasterCard debit: 123 million (as of Sept. 30, 2010)
  • Visa debit: 397 million (as of Sept. 30, 2010)
